Martingale Dog Collars Explained: A Safer, Smarter Choice for Leash Training

MARTINGALE COLLARS

In an earlier post, we explored dog collars and how to select the right option for your canine companion. As we continued researching the topic, it became clear just how much information exists about collars—and how many different purposes they serve. Dog collars vary widely in design, material, and function, and some are specifically created to support training and safety. In this post, we’re focusing on the Martingale dog collar and explaining why it’s a smart choice for everyday walks and leash training.

If you’re new to martingale collars, there are two main styles available. One version slides easily over your dog’s head, while the other includes a buckle for added convenience. Both styles are excellent tools for teaching leash manners and improving control during walks. A martingale collar helps keep your dog securely in place, preventing escape without relying on a traditional choke collar. Because it tightens only when your dog pulls and relaxes immediately afterward, it offers control without discomfort. These collars are also fully adjustable, making them a comfortable and humane option for daily use.

Martingale collars are designed with two connected loops. The larger loop fits over your dog’s head, while the leash attaches to the smaller loop. When your dog pulls forward or attempts to back out of the collar, tension on the leash causes the smaller loop to tighten slightly, reducing the size of the collar just enough to prevent slipping out. When your dog walks calmly, the collar loosens and rests comfortably around the neck. When fitted correctly, a martingale collar should never choke or cause pain—it simply provides gentle guidance.

Before purchasing a martingale collar, it’s important to determine the correct size for your dog. Follow these steps to ensure a proper fit:

  • Start by measuring the widest part of your dog’s head.

  • Next, measure the middle of your dog’s neck.

If your dog’s head is larger than their neck, choose a collar size that will comfortably slide over the head. If your dog’s neck is wider than their head, select a collar that fits snugly around the neck instead.

For larger dogs, it’s recommended to add about two inches to your measurements to allow room for weight changes and coat growth. Smaller dogs typically only need an extra inch added. No matter the size, the collar should be adjustable—loose enough to go over the head but secure enough to stay in place during walks.

If you opt for a martingale collar with a buckle, you’ll only need to measure the circumference of your dog’s neck. Take the measurement at the midpoint of the neck and add one to two inches for comfort and growth.

Both martingale collar styles work equally well, so the final decision comes down to personal preference. What matters most is choosing a collar that fits properly, feels comfortable for your dog, and provides safe, reliable control during walks. A well-fitted martingale collar can make leash training smoother and more enjoyable for both you and your dog.
