MARTINGALE COLLARS
In a previous post we discussed dog collars and how to choose the right collar for your dog. While doing research however, we learned there is a lot of information out there about dog collars. While they come in all shapes, sizes and collars, there are also types of dog collars that serve a purpose. In this post we will highlight the Martingale Dog Collar and the reasons you should consider using it when you walk your dog.
If you are unfamiliar with the martingale, there are two types of collars to choose from. One martingale collar slips over your dogs head and the other has a buckle. Either type of collar is the perfect collar to use when training your dog to walk on a leash. It helps you gain control of your dog during training by allowing your dog to remain in his collar—he won’t slip out and escape or run away. You’ll be able to maintain control of your dog without the annoyance of needing to use a choking collar. Martingale collars are fully adjustable and comfortable for your dog to wear.
This type of collar is made with two loops. The larger loop is slipped over the head of your dog while a lead is clipped to the smaller loop. When your dog tries to pull or slip out of the collar, the tension on the lead pulls on the small loop, making it smaller and tighter on your dogs’ neck. If the collar properly fits your dog, it will be comfortable and loose when your dog is not pulling against the leash.
Before buying a collar, however, you’ll need to determine what size collar you’ll need for your dog. Here’s how to decide on a collar size that best fits your dog:
Begin by measuring the largest part of your dogs head. Once you’ve done this, you’ll need to measure the middle of his neck.
If his head is larger than his neck, you’ll need to order a collar sized large enough to slip over your dogs head.
If his neck is larger than his head, you’ll need to purchase a collar that fits securely around his neck.
If you have a large dog, you’ll need to add an extra two inches that will allow for weight gain and the growth of his coat. If your dog is on the smaller side, you’ll only need to add an inch to the size of the collar.
When choosing a collar, it’s important to choose one that is adjustable. It should adjust just enough to slip over your dogs’ head, but it should also adjust to fit snug around his neck.
If you choose a martingale collar with a buckle, only measure the size of your dogs’ neck. Measure his neck at the middle, adding 1 to 2 inches for weight gain and growth of your dogs’ coat.
Either collar will work just fine for your dog, the choice is up to you. What’s most important is that the collar you choose is comfortable and that it fits your dog properly and securely.
