Giving Back During the Holidays: How You Can Help Shelter Pets in Utah

The holiday season is meant to be filled with joy—gatherings with loved ones, festive traditions, and time spent with our pets. Unfortunately, for animals living in shelters, the holidays pass much like any other day. They wait quietly, hoping that someone will notice them and offer the gift of a loving home.

This year, while you’re out shopping or attending seasonal events, consider supporting homeless pets by participating in local holiday giving initiatives designed specifically to brighten their days.

Support Shelter Pets Through the Santa Paws Project

One simple way to make a meaningful impact is by taking part in The Santa Paws Project. While running errands or shopping for gifts, pick up a new toy for a dog or cat and drop it off at participating pet supply locations throughout the Salt Lake City area and surrounding Utah communities.

All donated toys are distributed to animals currently housed at local shelters, including organizations such as the Utah Humane Society and participating municipal animal services. For shelter pets, something as small as a toy can bring comfort, enrichment, and a sense of care during an otherwise quiet season.

Celebrate the Season at a Holiday Fun Run and Adoption Event

Another way to give back while enjoying the holiday spirit is by attending a festive community event that supports animals in need. On Saturday, December 9, families are invited to take part in Twelve K’s of Christmas, a holiday-themed run and adoption event hosted at a local Utah park.

In addition to the race festivities, the event will feature adoptable animals from area shelters and a special Santa’s Pet Village, where pets can have their photo taken with Santa. Activities begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue through noon.

Participants can choose from three race options:

  • A 12K run

  • A 6K run

  • A family-friendly 1.2K Santa Sled Race

Prizes will be awarded for the most creative Christmas-themed outfits—both for people and their pets—making it a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved.

Event Location:

Sugar House Park
1330 E. 2100 S.
Salt Lake City, Utah 84105
