Naming our dogs is something we put a lot of thought into. Picking out the right name is important because it says a lot about who we are, our personality, and our way of thinking.
While waiting at the veterinarian one day a very large man, around six feet tall, held a small dog, a black terrier. When the veterinarian technician came out into the lobby, she called out the name “Spike,” and the two went back for the dogs check-up. It was definitely a head turning moment that day in the office, one that provoked a laugh or two from those waiting their turn.
When picking out a name for your dog, consider the type of name you would like for your pet. Did you know that more than half of all dog names are names usually reserved for people? That might be because we usually consider dogs to be a member of the family. Other names are based on the personality or appearance of the animal itself. For example, a Dalmation might be given the name Spot, or a Black Labrador might be called Midnight because of its color.
It’s also important when naming your dog to remember that you will use this name several times a day. You’ll call your dog in from the backyard and you’ll scold him when he goes potty inside the house. Pick out something nice, that doesn’t sound too harsh when your dog makes a mistake.
