Pet Loss Prevention Month: How to Keep Your Pets Safe, Peoria, AZ – Arrowhead Pooper Scoopers

Our pets are like members of our family and as such, we want to do anything we can to keep them safe and healthy. Last week’s blog post discussed how to help your dog deal with the trauma of loud noises like thunderstorms and fireworks. According to the ASPCA, one in five pets go missing due to noise phobia brought on by fireworks or thunderstorms thus more pets go missing during the 4th of July weekend than any other time of year. That is why July is Pet Loss Prevention Month. Below are some tips to keep your pet safe and at home all year long.

Microchip, Microchip, Microchip:

This technology is extremely beneficial in quickly reuniting pets with their families. It is a quick procedure similar to any other injection your pet would get. Many people choose to have it done at the same time they have their pet spayed or neutered.  If someone finds your lost pet and takes him to a shelter or vet, the chip will be scanned and you will be contacted that your pet is found. Be sure to keep the chip information up-to-date.

Keep a collar with an ID tag on your pet:

Not only does a collar and tag indicate to someone finding your dog that this dog is a family pet, it also quickly identifies who owns the dog. Put your pet’s name on the ID tag so whoever finds him can call him by name. This will lessen your pet’s anxiety. Practice safety measures when traveling with a pet: Be sure to keep your dog or cat’s collar and ID tag on them at all times when you are traveling.

Harness and leash your pet:

When walking your dog or traveling, always use a leash. You never know when a sudden loud noise could spook him and cause him to run off. A harness provides that extra measure of security. It is much more difficult for a scared or nosy pet to escape from a harness. Keep a tight hold on the leash and frequently check the collar, harness and leash for any signs of wear.  Retractable leashes often wear in places that aren’t always visible so check the entire leash.

Get a pet tracker:

GPS is another technology that the pet industry has capitalized on. Consider purchasing a pet tracker for your pet’s collar. This will allow you to track where your pet is should he run away. Many have apps that allow you set alerts if your dog should leave his yard or safe zone.
