International Pooper Scooper Week, SLC, UT – Rocky Mountain Pooper Scoopers

International Pooper Scooper Week is held each year from April 1-7.  If you haven’t planned an event just yet, it’s not too late plan something. All you need to do is contact your local parks and recreation department and let them know you want to volunteer to clean up dog poo in your community.

You can volunteer all by yourself, with the people you work with, or maybe even gather up a group of volunteers in your community to help out.  Contact your local newspaper and submit a press release letting everyone know what you plan to do throughout the week. Be sure to provide plenty of gloves and poop bags for those participating in the dog poo clean-up!

International Pooper Scooper Week was put into place after a group of pooper scoopers formed an organizational called The Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists (aPaws), in February 2002. They came together as a group because they believed every dog deserved a moment in the spotlight but it wasn’t just for that reason. Dog poop is becoming a problem in our communities and aPaws wanted to educate dog owners on how important it was to clean up after their dogs, both at home, and on the go.

Did you know that dogs produce an estimated 5.8 billion pounds of dog waste per year?  That’s enough poop to cover 900 football fields nearly a foot and half foot deep each!

As dog owners it’s important to remember that we need to do our part not only during International Pooper Scooper Week, but all year round as well. When we take the time to make sure our environment is clear of potential health risks our world will be a cleaner, healthier place for all of us to live!

Events have been planned all across the United States by professional pooper scoopers and other volunteer organizations. To find an event near you, visit http://www.apaws.org. Be sure to visit their website to register your organization, become a member, or simply to learn more about how to keep your dog healthy.
