April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month and you can make a difference. ASPCA was the first humane society in North America, established in 1866, and has dedicated itself to the kind and respectful treatment of animals. With over 2 million supporters, this organization is privately funded. ASPCA and humane society organizations like them need our help. As much as we love our fur babies, the awful reality is that animal abuse does exist. But we can be their voice. Here are some ways you can help protect animals everywhere.
Take Action through Advocacy Events:
The ASPCA helps local legislators enact laws to protect animals. Visit the Advocacy Center on their website and take action through the actionable events in your state and nationwide.
Donate: Put your money to work through the ASPCA or your local humane society or shelter.
Report Animal Cruelty:
Learn how to recognize the signs of abuse and report it. Don’t stay silent. Contact your local police department, shelter, or animal control agency. You can also download Animal League Defense Fund’s app LiveSafe to report neglect or abuse after you have reported it to your local law enforcement. Be factual and concise when reporting. If you are able to safely take photos of the abuse, it will help the case. However, never enter private property without permission. Remember, animals who are being abused are scared, so use caution.
Adopt, don’t shop:
When bringing a new furry baby into your family, visit a shelter and adopt a rescue animal. When you adopt a shelter dog, you are saving a life and giving a deserving animal a second chance. A rescued dog knows it has been rescued, and shows it!
Volunteer:
Give your time to a local animal shelter or animal rescue. These organizations are primarily run by volunteers are always in need of help. You can help clean crates, walk dogs, provide play time, and even help groom the animals to prep them for adoption. Shelters are also always in need of old blankets and towels. Contact your local shelter to find out their needs.
Share on social media:
Get the word out. Spread the word on all your social media accounts to bring awareness. Share articles on how to help and links to shelters and organizations where your friends can volunteer or donate. In Phoenix, two great organizations are #LovePup and Arizona Animal Welfare League.
Wear Orange:
Orange is the color of prevention of cruelty to animals month. Wear orange in April to bring awareness.
